This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
