The Devastating Shift a Single Year Has Made in the United States

One year ago, the situation was utterly separate. Prior to the national election, thoughtful residents could admit the country's significant faults – its injustices and inequality – however they still could perceive it as the United States. A free society. A country where legal governance carried weight. A nation led by a dignified and ethical leader, despite his older age and increasing frailty.

Currently, this autumn, countless Americans barely recognize the country we reside in. Individuals believed to be illegal immigrants are collected and forced into vehicles, sometimes denied due process. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque ballroom. Donald Trump is persecuting his political rivals or supposed enemies and insisting the justice department transfer a massive sum of taxpayer money. Soldiers with weapons are being sent to US urban areas on false pretexts. The military command, renamed the Department of War, has effectively liberated itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses what could amount to close to a trillion USD of taxpayer money. Institutions, law firms, media outlets are yielding under the president’s threats, and billionaires are treated like nobility.

“The United States, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the edge toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” Garrett Graff, commented in August. “In the end, faster than I thought feasible, it did happen in America.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.

However, we know that the president was properly voted in. Following his deeply disturbing initial presidency and following the warnings linked to the understanding of the conservative plan – following the president personally said publicly he would rule as a tyrant solely at the start – a majority of citizens elected him instead of the other candidate.

As terrifying as the present situation may be, it's more daunting to recognize that we are just several months into this presidential term. What will an additional three years of this decline position us? And suppose that period turns into something even longer, since there is not anyone to stop this leader from deciding that additional tenure is essential, possibly for national security reasons?

Granted, not everything is hopeless. There are legislative votes the coming year that may bring a different balance of power, if Democrats regain the Senate or House of Congress. We have public servants who are trying to apply some accountability, such as lawmakers currently launching an investigation concerning the try to cash appropriation by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote in the next cycle could initiate our journey to healing just as last year’s election set us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see countless citizens protesting in public spaces of their cities, as they did last weekend during anti-authority protests.

An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the great sleeping giant of America is rising”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or amid the sixties activism or in the Nixon controversy.

During those times, the tilting vessel ultimately corrected itself.

Reich says he understands the signs of that revival and notices it unfolding now. As evidence, he points to the widespread marches, the widespread, bipartisan pushback to a television host's removal and the largely united refusal by journalists to sign military mandates they report only approved content.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists inactive till some venality grows too toxic, an specific act so offensive of societal benefit, specific cruelty so loud, that the giant is forced but to awaken.”

It's a positive outlook, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may prove to be right.

In the meantime, the big questions persist: is the US able to regain its footing? Can it reclaim its status in the world and its adherence to legal principles?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My pessimistic brain tells me that the final scenario is true; that everything might be finished. My optimistic spirit, however, convinces me that we must try, in whatever ways we can.

Personally, working in journalism analysis, that’s about encouraging reporters to live up, more thoroughly, to their mission of holding power to account. For others, it might involve working on congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or discovering methods to safeguard electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we existed in an alternate reality. In the future? Or after another term? The fact is, we are uncertain. The only option is to attempt to persevere.
