Hamilton Island, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the area is built upon, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
