New South Wales authorities have levied a penalty against an American social media personality and handed out two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation following a swarm of electric bicycle users converged on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during peak-hour traffic on Tuesday.

The Incident: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of around 40 individuals operating electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The riders then turned around and traveled through the downtown area and a nearby district.

"This had a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on Wednesday.

Police indicated they did not immediately pursue the group out of concerns for public safety but rather found the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Fines Imposed for Content Creator

On Saturday, police announced they had served the US social media influencer known as the influencer, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), carrying a penalty of $562 and three demerit points per notice, in relation to the bridge ride-out. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality is said to have over 3.4m subscribers on YouTube and more than 1.2m on the social media app.

Influencer's Comments

The online figure spoke with a local publication recently after the incident spread rapidly on digital platforms, saying he was sorry for giving "the biking community" a negative image.

"I accept the blame. That was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to come here respecting the laws and norms of the city. When I decided to do a public meeting it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to say hi under the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had a decision to make: whether the group rides the full length of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we reverse, basically, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to go back."

Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules

The increase of e-bikes on roads nationwide has sparked growing calls for regulation. The federal health minister, the minister, recently said that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are presenting at our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," the minister said. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things entering the country [and] police are granted the powers to take strong action, to confiscate them, to crush them, to destroy them."

The state recorded 226 injuries associated with electric bikes in the previous year. But, in the initial half of the following year, that figure surged to 233 injuries plus four fatalities.
